Another Golden Competition for Team USA

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

USA Gymnastics: Oct. 10 - Women's All-Around Final &emdash; Women's All-Around Medalists

Today, Team USA took home two more medals, a silver and a gold. The women's all-around competition kicked off at 7 a.m. here via the live stream, bringing high-flying vaults and shaky beam routines to my living room. Honestly, this is such a blessing for people who watch gymnastics. A few years ago, you'd just have to read about the competition later in a blog post.

While awesome, the system seems to fail and glitch at least once during the event. Today was no different. Universal Sports apparently was "running" the live feed displayed by USA Gymnastics. Regardless, it went down right after the top gymnasts vaulted and created a panic on Twitter. Eventually, it back on during bars, but damage had been done. Routines were missed. Maybe next time gymnastics will get reliable coverage. They have months until the next competition to continue to work on the live feed capabilities. Sorry not sorry so many gymnastics fans showed up to watch live. Figure out how to handle how awesome me are.

Anyways, like I said, still a blessing.

The meet continued with some shaky beam performances by Simone Biles and Aliya Mustafina. With only tenths between them, they headed to floor where Larisa Iordache performed with energy, but maybe a little too much, stepping out of bounds. Kyla Ross was flawless like usual. It's Kyla. Then Aliya plopped on her butt on her first pass. With a look of self-disgust, she stood back up and made the best of the rest of the routine. Simone just needed a pretty typical routine to win the gold, and as you see in the top photo, she did! The landings were a little crazy, but the score lifted her to the top. The best part: with struggles from Yao Jinnan and Aliya, Kyla got third! While only a bronze, not silver like last year, it's still impressive considering her injuries and the competition.

Now, all that is left are event finals. You can check out the schedule on my last blog. We are going to try and stay up for the first night of finals. But unless my cabin at the James River State Park has excellent Wi-Fi, wedding festivities will keep us from viewing the final night of worlds. Thankfully, I know all the routines will be on USA Gymnastics' Youtube channel when I get home.
