Facebooking My Homies with Graph Search

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

Ready to search your friends, or homies, on Facebook in a new, while slightly invasive, way? You are in luck. Sign up for Facebook's Graph Search. Scroll to the bottom of that webpage and sign up! I did earlier this week.

While it gives you useful paths for your searches, such as starting a hiking club or seeing who has traveled to the same destinations as you. But honestly, I think most of the use will be weird or just pointless. I did some test run searches, and basically, I had no goal in mind. Maybe you will.

My favorite part of the new search is the recognition of slang. My photo displays one of my searches for homies that love Jayhawks. I have lots of those. :)

For a targeted advertising perspective, this tool adds value to all that random information humans put on Facebook. Some people might hate the fact that computers notice what you do online and target their advertisements toward your Facebook likes and Internet browsing habits. I personally am thankful. If I am going to stare at content, it might as well be pretty to my brain. I'd rather see Nike shoes and Taco Bell than diapers and heartburn medication, am I right? So if you thought this was over the top before, it has only started.

Not everyone is thinking all this information in searchable form is a good thing. Facebook did consider privacy aspects in regards to youth under 18 right from the start. People in that age sector disappear from certain searches, such as people looking for people of a certain age in a certain location. The slow rollout also shows the company wants to see how it goes. Legal snags are almost a given like many Facebook changes.

So, if you are interested, I urge you to sign up. Let me know what you come up with or what you think of it? I am interested to see if you think it invades you or is nifty.
