UVA Is Not KU

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

Cole and I enjoy our first UVA basketball game.

Well, I attended my first college basketball game outside of Allen Fieldhouse. Honestly, I wasn't expecting anything spectacular (sorry, UVA) because nothing can compare to my Jayhawks or AFH. Let's be honest.

Regardless, the John Paul Jones Arena doesn't disappoint in the classy department as far as facilities go. It's definitely new and offers good viewing. Granted, I wasn't in the nosebleed section, so I can't vouch for that. But from our corner spot in the student section, Cole and I watched UVA take on No. 19 NC State.

Let the game begin.

Cole and I didn't know much about the players on either team. Cole informed me C.J. Leslie on NC State's team is hot stuff, but he was under the weather and didn't start. You could definitely tell he had more skill than the people around him.

C.J. Leslie looks to score.

He shot tons of free throws.

But mostly, it just wasn't a super exciting game. Not too many fast breaks. A few dunks. But when you don't care who wins, it's not as intense to watch. I did enjoy it though. I like watching basketball, even it's not Kansas. So, I don't have much else to report from the game until the very end. So enjoy some photos.

A McDonald's blimp flew around for a while, but soon had technical difficulties and was taken down.

Halftime included a sweet painter. It was a little cheesy at the start and dull during the process, but the end result as good.

Here's a halfway look.

The final image was Cav Man riding his horse. Talent right there.

Both teams warming up after halftime.

Both teams huddle up before starting the second half.

Coming from Kansas, I just feel bad when you celebrate getting into the tournament. But go you, I guess ...

Now the game really starts to heat up. UVA trailed most of the game. But now, they are catching up. They have a lead. Then all of a sudden the clock is ticking down and NC State can't make a bucket.

Fans are starting to get anxious.

Let's all do the U-V-A Hey Song. Not my favorite song/cheer.

Clock at zero! UVA beats No. 19.

Final score.

I look forward to more sporting events. As much as I dislike Duke and North Carolina, it might be worthwhile to go see them when they stop by UVA. It's within walking distance. It's college basketball. But it will never be AFH.
