Visa Championships - On the Road to London

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

Every four years, gymnasts from across the world strive to do one thing, make the Olympic team. This year, that test narrows down to a few more weeks. Along the road to London was the Visa Championships in St. Louis, Mo., and I was there with Cole.

You can check out my photos in the Photography section of the site or check out each of these albums:

Visa Championships 2012 - Liukin and Sloan

Visa Championships 2012 - Sacramone, Raisman and Maroney

Visa Championships - Douglas, Wieber, Ross and Vega

Visa Championships 2012 - Awards and Fan Fest

The high-flying vaults, graceful bar routines, precise leaps down the beam and stuck floor passes dazzle the live crowd. On the TV, you see every little detail and the replays, but in person, you can see how athletic these young girls really are. Young isn't wrong either. We saw everyone — junior girls and boys and senior men and women.

After four days of competition, the best stood on the podium, waved and braced for their next test — the Olympic trials. After the trials, the team will be announced, but the tricky part is only five with compete in the red, white and blue in London. One less than the Beijing Olympics four years ago.

The rule change makes it even harder to make the team, and the women have lots of talent to pick from. Jordyn Wieber earns favor after winning so many all-around titles, followed closely by Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman.

A few veterans are back in the game, too. Alicia Sacramone, Bridget Sloan, and my favorite, Nasita Liukin are giving the Olympics another go. To many people's disappointment, Shawn Johnson retired a few weeks ago, but cheered on her friends at the Visa Championships.

No doubt these next few weeks will be working hard, and let's hope there aren't any injuries. And gymnasts get lots of those. Check out this video to see just what I mean.
