World Wednesday: Leap Day

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

A day started across the world, initiated by a Roman and celebrated with cookies from Subway, started and ended like any other day in the Malmberg apartment. My alarm wailed. I hit snooze — multiple times. I drug myself out of bed, went to work, ate pizza, came home, went to Bible study and will drift off to sleep soon.

So what is the point of an extra day? I think a day just for leaping around would be fun, but it turns out that wasn't the reason, even though dancers and gymnasts around the world would give the holiday a nod.

Well, as I am sure you have heard by now from any media source you listened to today, the world takes a little longer than 365 days to travel around the sun. So back in Roman times, Julius Caesar added an extra day to February every four years to keep festivals synced with seasons.

The extra day of 2012 could brim with relaxation or more work depending on your need. But for me, it was an extra day to thank my husband for my site. For the month of February I wrote a blog every day for his Valentine's Day present. But what I realized, I didn't get just one more day to thank him for my blog, I got one more day to spend with him during our first year of marriage. So happy Valentine's month, a happy extra day of first-year marriage, and happy leap day, Cole, all on the same day.
