Fantasy Basketball: Week 1

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

Well, Week 1 proved difficult for some and unexpected awesome for others. I am sad to report that the Bikini Bottom Nash Potatoes fell short, especially with their namesake out because of a leg injury. He is still alive and will be back to support the team score in a little more than a week. I hope.

Here is how the week played out:

Adam Silver's Henchmen League
Team Name Owner Points Record
Small Ball Is Dead Cole 732 1-0
Bikini Bottom Nash Potatoes Brenna 563 0-1
STRO LOKO Chris 590 0-1
Make It Happen Matt 635 1-0
m.A.A.d. city Jay 854 1-0
Team Cougars Keith 597 0-1
Lawrence Pump - Fake Piggies Janel 582 1-0
I Drafted Injured Players Dillon 453 0-1

Dillon's team name tells you a little about his team, but his team photo explains it a little better. . . .

Photo Friday: Cute, Athletic Smiles

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

Late this summer, I had the opportunity to capture a bunch of cute, athletic smiles for a photo company in town. My Saturday mornings were filled with lots of elementary school students, parents and soccer balls. This type of photography takes a different skill than candid photos I am accustomed to for the newspaper. These posed shots involved more planning and a greater understanding of my camera equipment than I am used to or prefer. . . .

Overblessified Thursday: First Hurricane

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

During the hurricane, we only incurred one tangled wind chime.

Outside the wind blew and the rain fell, but that was the extent of the storm for us here in Charlottesville. It appeared no worse than a regular Midwest thunderstorm. Who would of thought we would be experiencing a hurricane so soon after our East Coast move. We lost power for a while and I have a tangled ind chime, but no harm done. I can't say those along the coast and to the north had the same luck. Hurricane Sandy or Frankenstorm, caused billions of dollars in damage. I listened to countless stories on NPR about people without power and how they were getting by. . . .

Team Spirit Halloween Pumpkins

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

Cole is ready to carve with his huge pumpkin, UVA stencil and Disney princess carving tools.

While the hurricane was starting to blow outside, we carved pumpkins on Monday. These pumpkins were huge! We picked some great ones at the pumpkin patch. Missed that fun event? Check out Fall: Orchard, Pumpkins, Leaves.

While getting the pumpkins was great fun, finding carving tools was not. Either people don't carve pumpkins in Virginia, or they think the little carving knives are too dangerous. We tried about five different stores, including Wal-Mart (yes, Wal-Mart didn't have something). Finally, the Halloween store in the mall had a nice Disney princess set. . . .

Trick or treat! Thanks for the Halloween welcome sign, Mom.

It's a hurricane Halloween here on the East Coast. So let's swirl them together just like the weather decided to do for trivia this week.

1. How much will people spend on Halloween candy this year?

  • a. $8 million

2. What wind speed must a storm reach to be classified as a hurricane? . . .
